I tend to skip trends. I never used MySpace. I was way over ripped jeans before distressed became stylish. I gave up wearing slides years ago before mules consumed the shoe aisle. I have a lifelong distaste for leopard print, snakeskin, or anything animal print (with the exception of fur), so it won’t be in my closet this year.
But on rare occasion I will step out in an outfit head to toe on trend. When I put on this look I told my mom, “Right now I am so 2018.”
Let me break it down–a loose plaid blazer, high rise jeans, a white blouse with statement sleeves and ruffle shoulders (hidden beneath the blazer), a simple locket necklace, and a pair of shoes like loafers.
Completely on trend.
I can claim individuality as much as I can, but the truth is that I still jump on some trends. One of my favorite summer dresses is cold shoulder style. I have cropped jeans and wide leg trousers too. This plaid blazer was purchased at the beginning of fall when the trend peaked.
This outfit is a happy accident of a trend mash. As I age, a trend only enters my closet if it matches my personal style and flatters my figure. Cropped lengths and wide leg pants flatter me more than skinny, boot, or straight cuts, but I can wear almost any cut of denim if it is high waisted. This plaid blazer is a classic piece that will not age, and I regularly wear blazers. One of my favorite shirts growing up had statement sleeves, and I was thrilled when they became an easy style to find in stores.
Yes, the fall of 2018 is a magical allignment of my tastes with trends. Classic pieces are in, and it feels odd to put on a favorite piece and feel trendy. At the same time, I know the moment is fleeting. Next year plaid blazers might be a joke. No one may want to wear their leopard print skirt. People will look back at cropped length pants and ask what we were all thinking. Who knows, maybe my children will read through this blog one day and ask me why my taste was so poor.
Or maybe they won’t, because I’ll still be wearing my blazers, my blouses, and my high rise jeans.
