Styling, Editing, Photography: Mary Tait
Model is Lauren Vukovich
I’ve known Lauren since high school, but we hadn’t seen each other in years. It was fun to hang out with her again, even if it was only for a fast and furious photoshoot because the mosquitoes were swarming. I did a little more styling in the shoot, which is something I would love to more, but I have no budget. Fortunately I could pull items from my own closet in this shoot. I pictured her in this star sweater early on, and when we discussed styling I decided to photograph her in it. I think the star print adds to the playfulness of the shoot theme.
I had all sorts of post-editing ideas for these images. I thought about black and white with splashes of color, stripes of paint, sections of blur… but in the end I realized I didn’t really want to photoshop anything. When I first got into photography I used photoshop to edit and did some crazy creative editing, but for whatever reason I’ve wandered far from that. I’ve seen it in my writing too. Though I still write fantasy/science fiction my writing in more recent years is very realistic. I realize that the prop for this shoot might seem random without the edits, but I loved the way Lauren worked with the paint brushes. In the end I think the images work on their own without the photoshop. What do you think? Would it have been better with some creative editing?
