Play is a cornerstone of my style, and I love to pick up something that has been regularly ignored by most people and make it work. As I talked about in my post about building a unique wardrobe I regularly try on the “ugly” pieces on the rack that aren’t flashy and if I like them enough, take the challenge to make them work. (And I’m pretty good at it too.)
Brooches are one of those accessories that can feel extremely dated and tacky. Oversized bling and kitsch shapes can make them feel gaudy or extremely dated (and not in an elegant, vintage sort of way).
Last year I began looking for ways to wear some of my brooches in my jewelry box—some cute finds from a rummage sale a couple years earlier. This year I pulled out some of my grandmother’s brooches (that fit my style) and decided to style them.
When I first styled this outfit I thought to put it on the blazer lapel, but when I struggled to find a necklace to balance everything out I thought about combining a brooch and a scarf. I simply tied the scarf once around my neck, left the ends at different lengths, and slipped the brooch through the two layers to create a sort of faux ruffle.
I love the final look. I admit, the hat makes it very quirky, and was not a planned accessory, but I brought it anyway in case the wind got too strong. The wind refused to keep my hair out of my face so I went with the hat. I know some people might find it dorky, but I totally love it. It adds to the vintage feel and adds a whimsical touch I enjoy.
The blazer I’m wearing actually comes with a brooch and it’s on sale (and it comes in plus sizes). I’m tempted to get it in the black sometime, but I already have so many blazers… I’m a serious blazer addict. Would it surprise you that I absolutely hated them growing up?
Anyway, my ultimate brooch goal is to style my grandmother’s gigantic green, orange, and yellow gem brooch that fills the palm of my hand. It’s like a puzzle waiting to be solved. We will see if it ever happens.
Thursday Moda Link-Up
Today I am hosting a link up party with the lovely Ada of Elegance and Mommyhood. We both chose to style brooches but ended up also styling blazers as well. I love the way she belted her blazer and her sunglasses are the cutest!
I’ve co-hosted a couple of link ups with Ada and always enjoy working with this lovely lady.
Here is a bit about Ada:
