Wind

Invisible, ever moving.
It tramples trees and dances with dandelions.
We know the wind. We see the wind.
But we can never catch it.

Spindle

That which tames wild wool into thread,
readying it for skilled hands to weave and bind into something new.
A tapestry.
A blanket.
A coat.
A covering.
A memory.
A message.

Musings of a One-Year Blogger

Some of you, possibly most of you, are coming from my previous blog. I intended to keep the name, but the more I ruminated on what I wanted this blog to be, I realized that I would have to step away and begin anew.

Last year I struggled to find a blogging niche, and didn’t recognize what I wanted to create until summer turned to fall. I began to put little stories to my outfit posts, and I received a wonderful response. And I thought, “I FINALLY know what I want to blog about!”

Then writing stories became harder week after week. I wasn’t able to put the time into the posts I wanted, and I missed writing about other topics.

Temperatures dropped and my health deteriorated (I have Lyme’s disease) so I put all posting on hold. I worked to learn my photo editor and to figure exactly how I would present my work so that it made sense.

I was sure I wanted to style outfits. I wanted to write about real life. I also wanted to share my creative work of photography and writing, all while inspiring others to be creative as well. I wanted to explore the world through style, writing, and photography, but I had no clue how to explain it to anyone.

Charting the Adventure

One day I was writing up an Instagram post to say I was still planning to blog when I came up with an excellent little phrase, “aesthetic exploration.”

When I first began blogging I remember saying to my sister that I couldn’t have a lifestyle blog because my life was boring. Lyme keeps me at home most days and 50% of my brain time is spent on survival and staying healthy. I didn’t have much money, I couldn’t travel, and I have a strict diet so I can’t even post a cliche “what I’m eating at the cafe” Instagram picture. (I know, terrible right?) But this is what was holding me back—I didn’t think my daily life was interesting enough.

To my surprise my sister replied, “I don’t think so.”

As I mulled over how to explain this blog I realized that part of the way I live is in constant exploration. I’m always learning, gathering information, creating, growing… Even with bad health I have always gravitated towards creativity (that is how I gained an interest for fashion).

For me, aesthetic exploration is a part of everyday life. Whether it is in words I write, pictures I take, things I see, or the way I dress, imagination and the desire to learn and create are traits that influence most of my life.

Charting the Adventure

So how does one spindle the wind?
It is rather an impossible task…

…But perhaps I can take the wild and invisible and catch traces of it like fallen strands of silk, twist it around my spindle, slip it into a pen and weave it into words on a page.

Maybe I will glimpse a tremor in the air and seal the moment away in a photograph.

I might slip into an outfit one day, and found that it has woven itself into the fabric I am wearing.

This is Wind & Spindle, the chronicles of my adventures as I explore the world through the aesthetics of words, style, and photography.

I cannot guarantee that it will be the most extraordinary thing you have seen and read, but I want to have fun on the journey, and I hope you will too.
